Bienvenidos a Torrevieja.
Torrevieja Turns Football into a Celebration Without Age or Borders with the Opening of the European Nations Cup 2026
The city welcomes European walking football teams in an exciting opening ceremony marked by fellowship, inclusion and sporting spirit. Fourteen countries and 40 teams are taking part in this international competition, bringing together men and women across six age categories.
Torrevieja has once again demonstrated that sport is one of the best ways to bring people together, regardless of their origins, age or personal circumstances. The city hosted the fantastic opening ceremony of the European Nations Cup FIWFA 2026, a major international walking football competition that is turning the municipality into a meeting point for athletes from different European countries.
The opening ceremony, held at the Sports City, provided an opportunity to welcome the various national delegations and highlight the values that give this sporting discipline its true meaning: friendship, respect, fellowship, inclusion and a passion for football. It was a celebration in which the competition itself was accompanied by something even more important: the opportunity to share experiences, strengthen bonds and enjoy sport in an atmosphere of genuine fraternity.
The championship, taking place from 2 to 6 November at Torrevieja Sports City, boasts an impressive international turnout, with 14 nations and 40 teams competing across six categories. This participation reflects the growing popularity of walking football in Europe and its ability to bring together people from different generations through a shared passion.
Six Categories Proving That Football Has No Age Limit
The competition features three men’s categories, for players aged over 50, 60 and 70, and three women’s categories, for players aged over 40, 50 and 60.
- Men’s categories: Over 50, Over 60 and Over 70.
- Women’s categories: Over 40, Over 50 and Over 60.
This structure allows men and women to continue enjoying sporting activities and the excitement of representing their respective countries, demonstrating that age does not have to be a barrier to staying active and taking part in an international competition.
Walking Football, Much More Than Just a Sport
Walking Football is an adapted version of the game that retains the essence of traditional football while introducing one fundamental rule: players must walk rather than run. This makes the sport more accessible, allowing participants to maintain physical activity, improve coordination and enjoy the benefits of playing as part of a team.
FIWFA (The Federation of International Walking Football Associations) actively promotes this philosophy, encouraging a sporting discipline based on physical activity, enjoyment and friendly competition, with particular emphasis on participation and accessibility.
Torrevieja, a Stage for Fellowship and International Recognition
Hosting the European Nations Cup also represents a new opportunity to promote Torrevieja’s image as an international sporting destination. The City Council, through its Department of Sports, continues to support major sporting events which, in addition to encouraging healthy lifestyles, help boost the local economy and welcome visitors from different countries.
Throughout these days, the municipal sports facilities are becoming a meeting place for different cultures, languages and generations, where every match represents an opportunity to share something far more meaningful than just a result.
Because if there is one thing this competition demonstrates, it is that sport knows no borders, enthusiasm is not measured in years, and it is never too late to lace up your boots, step onto the pitch and enjoy what brings us all together.
Welcome to Torrevieja. Welcome to the European celebration of Walking Football. Because football belongs to everyone and is for everyone.
