Torrevieja Raises the Flags of the World to Open the World Sport Fishing Championships

Sixteen national teams and 133 senior and junior anglers are taking part in a world-class event combining competition, maritime tradition and international fellowship.

Torrevieja once again demonstrated its ability to host major international sporting events with a spectacular opening ceremony for the 61st World Championship in Boat Anchored Fishing, Senior Category, and the 25th Junior World Championship. The parade of flags, music, the vibrant colours of Carnival and the national anthems took centre stage during a day that brought the streets of the city centre to life and culminated in the official ceremony at the Municipal Theatre.

The championships are organised by the Spanish Federation of Fishing and Casting, the International Sport Fishing Federation in the Sea and the Valencian Community Fishing Federation. They are supported by the Torrevieja City Council’s Department of Sports and the Marina Internacional Yacht Club, which will host the competitions in the waters off Torrevieja.

The opening programme began in the early afternoon with a spectacular parade led by the band of the Ciudad de Torrevieja “Los Salerosos” Musical Society, conducted by Alejandro Gómez and accompanied by the Daimana Carnival troupe. Behind them came the international procession, made up of representatives from the participating countries, proudly carrying their respective national flags.

A total of 93 senior anglers and 40 junior competitors are taking part in this world championship, which brings together sixteen national teams and turns Torrevieja into a meeting point for sport fishing enthusiasts from around the world.

The parade through the city’s commercial centre was greeted with applause from residents, visitors and tourists, many of whom spontaneously joined in the festive atmosphere. The streets and the terraces of cafés and hospitality venues provided a privileged vantage point from which to watch this colourful international presentation.

The Municipal Theatre Hosts the Official Opening Ceremony

The procession arrived at the Municipal Theatre, the venue chosen for the official opening ceremony, which was presented by Ade García. Representatives of the institutions and sporting federations took to the stage, with speeches delivered in both Spanish and English to ensure that the international delegations could follow the proceedings.

The first speaker was Diana Box Alonso, Councillor for Sports at Torrevieja City Council, who thanked the organising federations for once again placing their trust in the city to host a competition of international standing. She highlighted the importance of continuing to attract top-level sporting events to a calendar that has established Torrevieja as a regular venue for competitions and gatherings across a wide range of disciplines.

For his part, José Segura, President of the Valencian Community Fishing Federation, praised Torrevieja’s organisational capabilities and the commitment shown by the city and Marina Internacional Yacht Club in making an event of this scale possible. His speech highlighted the importance of cooperation between sporting institutions and the local community in providing participants with an experience worthy of a world championship.

The welcome speeches concluded with Jesús Garay, representative of the Spanish Fishing Federation, who emphasised the high level of participation and the presence of sixteen national teams. Beyond the sporting dimension, he underlined the value of such gatherings in strengthening bonds of friendship among anglers, their families, technical staff and enthusiasts, making the championship an opportunity to share experiences and build relationships between the different delegations.

Flags and National Anthems Provide One of the Ceremony’s Most Moving Moments

One of the most solemn and emotional moments of the ceremony came with the presentation of the delegations and the playing of the national anthems. Representatives walked onto the stage carrying their respective flags as the musical compositions identifying each country rang out, creating a moment filled with symbolism and national pride.

Following the order established for the ceremony, the delegations of Germany, Algeria, Belgium, Croatia, Slovenia, France, England, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Portugal, San Marino and Switzerland paraded onto the stage, before the Spanish national anthem was played at the end in recognition of Spain’s role as host country.

The succession of flags and national melodies highlighted the international character of the competition and demonstrated how sport can bring people from different backgrounds together through shared values such as respect, effort, fair play and friendship.

The flag of the International Sport Fishing Federation in the Sea (FIPS-M) was then brought onto the stage, and its delegate, Carlos Vinagre, delivered an emotional speech inviting all participants to experience the championship as a true celebration of sport. He encouraged them to pursue their best possible results while also embracing fellowship and mutual understanding between nations. The ceremony concluded with the FIPS-M anthem.

Sette Voci Brings an Artistic Finale to the Opening Ceremony

Once the formal proceedings had concluded, music once again took centre stage. Torrevieja vocal group Sette Voci performed a recital featuring three very different pieces, showcasing the expressive power of their voices and a repertoire designed to bring the day to a close on a distinctly artistic note.

The first performance was “Never Enough”, the well-known song from the film The Greatest Showman, made famous by Loren Allred on the movie’s soundtrack. Composed by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the piece has become one of the great contemporary songs of musical theatre and cinema, thanks to its powerful vocal progression and intense, emotional character.

Next came “Habanera salada”, a song closely linked to Torrevieja’s musical identity through its evocation of the sea and the city’s habanera tradition. This genre is one of Torrevieja’s most recognisable cultural hallmarks, with maritime-inspired songs forming part of a deeply rooted musical heritage closely associated with the International Habaneras and Polyphony Competition.

The recital concluded with “Cantares”, the celebrated song associated with Joan Manuel Serrat, who set some of the best-known verses by Antonio Machado to music. Featured on the album Dedicado a Antonio Machado, poeta, released in 1969, the song draws on Machado’s poetry to reflect on life’s journey, personal freedom and the lasting impact of individual choices. Its universal message provided a particularly evocative conclusion to a ceremony defined by cultural exchange.

Through these three performances, Sette Voci brought a distinctly local touch to an event of international significance, uniting contemporary music, the habanera tradition and poetry set to music. Following the performance, athletes, federation representatives and organisers shared a reception in the foyer of the Municipal Theatre, bringing to an end a day that served as the perfect introduction to the championships.

Four Days of Competition in the Waters off Torrevieja

Following the opening ceremony, the sporting programme continues at Marina Internacional Yacht Club, where participants will compete in the scheduled rounds to determine the leading anglers in both categories.

Monday, 26 October, is reserved for the official practice session. Competitors will depart for the club facilities at 7:30 a.m., with bait and packed lunches distributed at 8:00 a.m. Activities on the water will begin at 9:00 a.m. The session will conclude at 3:00 p.m., and the practice results will be announced at 4:30 p.m.

The first official round will take place on Tuesday, 27 October, following the same departure and return schedule. The second round is scheduled for Wednesday, 28 October, followed by the third on Thursday, 29 October. These decisive days will determine the final standings in a championship that demands concentration, technical skill and a thorough understanding of fishing conditions.

Boat anchored fishing requires precision and expertise. Competitors fish from boats held in a fixed position, assess the surrounding marine conditions and apply the appropriate strategies to achieve catches in accordance with the rules of the discipline. Consistency and the ability to adapt can prove decisive in determining the final results.

Friday, 30 October, has been designated as a reserve day and the official closing day. At 1:30 p.m., a meal for anglers and skippers will be hosted by Marina Internacional Yacht Club. The closing ceremony will take place at 7:00 p.m., followed by the gala dinner at 8:00 p.m. On Saturday, 31 October, the delegations will begin their journeys home.

With the sea as its backdrop and maritime tradition at the heart of its identity, Torrevieja is once again hosting an international event that brings together sport, tourism and fellowship. The participation of sixteen national teams offers an opportunity to showcase the city beyond its borders and further strengthen its connection with nautical activities and sport fishing.
